General Information

Arrest: If you are arrested you should request to speak with the American Embassy.  The phone number is 261-20-22-212-57. This number is manned 24 hours/day, and the receptionist will put you or local authorities in contact with the Embassy staff. If you cannot reach the Embassy, try to contact someone locally who can attempt to reach the Embassy.  You can access a list of English speaking attorneys in Madagascar here.

Death: Report the death of an American Citizen in Madagascar and Comoros to the Embassy in Antananarivo as soon as possible. Death reports are accepted 24 hours per day by telephone at 261-20-22-212-57, by cell phone text message to 261-33-11-753-69, or by e-mail to mailto:ConsAntan@state.gov (this e-mail is available 24 hours per day but only checked during business hours). The Embassy and the U.S. State Department can help with notification of next of kin, assist with making arrangements for shipment of the remains, provide the Consular Report of Death (used in place of a death certificate in the U.S.) and assist with the estate. Please note that the Embassy cannot pay to return remains to the United States nor to inter remains overseas, but can help receive and transfer funds to pay for these services.

Victims of Crime: If you are the victim of a crime, first get to a safe location and seek medical attention, if needed. Then, notify local authorities and the U.S. Embassy in Antananarivo. You can reach the Embassy by telephone at 261-20-22-212-57 or by e-mail at mailto:ConsAntan@state.gov. While there are no consular personnel stationed in Comoros, we can respond from Antananarivo. 

We can assist you with such issues as: replacing a stolen passport; contacting family, friends, or employers; obtaining appropriate medical care; addressing emergency needs that arise as a result of the crime; obtaining general information about the local criminal justice process and information about your case; obtaining information about local resources to assist victims, including foreign crime victim compensation programs; obtaining information about crime victim assistance and compensation programs in the U.S.; and obtaining a list of local attorneys who speak English.

Consular officials cannot, however, investigate crimes, provide legal advice or represent you in court, serve as official interpreters or translators, or pay legal, medical, or other fees for you. In addition, victims of crimes may be eligible for assistance or compensation from state crime victims assistance programs, which vary from state to state. Please click here for information about each state’s program.
